In 1909 the Architectural Association awarded their coveted Travelling Student Scholarship prize to Cyril Farey and he took the opportunity to tour Italy between February and April 1910 recording buildings as he travelled. He kept a detailed Diary of his scholarship tour, making detailed notes about the buildings he studied. This Diary is a treasure trove of information about his observations and opinions, his travel arrangements, acquaintances made, the pensiones and cafes he visited and the landscapes he discovered and fell in love with on walks deep into the hills and around the Italian lakes (the Diary is available for sale, please ask for more information).

Farey recorded the day he visited the Villa di Papa Giulio in Rome. The entry is dated 4 March 1910 when he spent the afternoon there on a particularly sunny day with his fellow architect and companion L. Kier Hett.

"In the afternoon, being very sunny H and I went again to the Villa di Papa Giulio and sketched till 4 when the Villa closed" (Diary 1910, p.24)

This is a beautiful coloured drawing of the Villa by one of the great 20th century architectural draughtsmen. It is made rare by the fact that it was a subject chosen by Farey himself in 1910 when he is his own master. Subjects by Farey generally available on the market are those commissioned from him by other members of the architectural profession.
